Kartagener Syndrome and Cytoskeletal Elements-Microtubules, Cilia

Microtubules:

  1. Microtubules=Tubes=Transport intracellular (most important in axons)
  2. Transport requires ATPase=Dynein+Kinesin
  3. Dynein= Retrogade, Kinesin=Anterograde

Microtubules=Mitotic Spindle (during Mitosis and Meiosis)

Cilia

2 central + 18 peripheral microtubules+ DYNEIN= Cilia
Cilia = Movement
  • 1. Respiratory tract = to move mucus, as pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium
  • 2. Sperm = form the core of flagella,which is motile part of sperm

Kartagener Syndrome

  •  Respiratory tract= Chronic respiratory infection=Bronchiectasis
  • Sperm=immotile spertazoa=infertility

why?
due to absence of Dynein, so that absence of functioning cilia.
